Morocco greenlights France’s Qair on 178MW solar & wind projects

The projects, Tetouan wind farm and Tiznit solar project, will begin operations in 2029 and 2027 respectively.

French renewable energy independent power producer Qair has announced that it has secured authorization from the Moroccan government for its Tetouan wind and Tiznit solar projects in the North African country. With a combined capacity of 178 MW, the projects will generate 505 GWh of electricity annually.

These assets are expected to provide clean, reliable energy to Moroccan industries, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions while strengthening the nation’s energy independence.

Qair disclosed that the Tetouan wind farm will begin operations in 2029, generating 390 GWh annually. Additionally, the Tiznit solar project—set for commissioning in late 2027—will produce 115 GWh per year.

The projects according to Qair are a pivotal development in Morocco’s efforts in advancing the newly implemented tariff framework for medium-voltage grid access, which enhances transparency and predictability—key factors for industrial offtakers adopting renewable energy.

Furthermore, the projects are crucial in helping Morocco achieve its target to have renewables constitute 52% of its energy mix by 2030

“Morocco’s regulatory clarity and ambitious energy vision are opening real opportunities for independent power producers like Qair to deliver long-term value,” says Wahba Zniber, Managing Director of Qair Maroc.

“With these large-scale authorizations, we are entering a new chapter — building on a decade of experience in self-consumption and now scaling to serve broader industrial needs,” Zniber added.

The Tetouan and Tiznit projects will eliminate more than 334,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year while delivering significant regional benefits. Beyond environmental gains, the initiatives will spur job creation, modernize infrastructure, open new opportunities for local suppliers, and provide manufacturers with stable energy costs.

Qair projects on the continent

Beyond Morocco, Qair is advancing its renewable energy initiatives across the African continent. In Tunisia, the company has secured agreements for two major solar photovoltaic projects totaling 298 MW in El Khobna and Gafsa. These projects are expected to generate approximately 1,000 GWh of electricity annually, contributing about 5% to Tunisia’s national electricity production and avoiding around 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

In Mauritius, the Group is preparing to commence construction on a 100 MWp solar photovoltaic project with 256 MWh of energy storage, a significant step towards the nation’s goal of achieving 60% renewable energy by 2030.

In Chad, the French company is developing two 15 MWp solar farms in Gassi and Lamadji, complemented by a 8 MWh battery energy storage system. These projects aim to produce 61 GWh of electricity annually, addressing the country’s energy deficit and contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions by an estimated 49,000 tonnes per year.
