Oya Energy’s 128MW hybrid project in SA achieves financial close

The hybrid power project is expected to provide clean power to some 180,000 South African homes once completed.

Oya Energy’s 128MW hybrid power plant near the town of Matjiesfontein, straddling the Western and Northern Cape Provinces of South Africa has reached financial close. The project was awarded to Oya Energy during South Africa’s Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP), and will consist of 86.4MW of wind, 155MWp bi-facial solar PV modules and 94MW / 242MWh of battery storage capacity.

Oya Energy is a special purpose vehicle (SPV), set up for the development of the hybrid power plant by the project’s shareholders, ENGIE Africa (35%), G7 Renewable Energies (Pty) Ltd. (20%), Meadows Energy (22.5%), and Perpetua Investment Managers (Pty) Ltd. (22.5%).

“This is a momentous milestone for G7 and its partner ENGIE Africa in the Oya Project,” said Dr Kilian Hagemann, CEO of G7 Renewable Energies (Pty) Ltd.

“We are incredibly proud of our team and grateful for the support of our partners. As the original developer of Oya since 2015, G7 led the visionary complex hybrid technical modelling, supplementing the originally planned stand-alone wind farm with optimally sized battery storage and photovoltaic to deliver this first-of-its-kind project,” added Hagemann.

Dispatchable capabilities

Once completed, Oya Energy’s hybrid power plant will be one of the largest hybrid energy projects in Africa considering the technology mix and size. Integrating wind, solar and energy storage will ensure the plant provides dispatchable power to the grid as and when needed.

“The Oya Hybrid project is an innovative first-of-its-kind power solution, and ENGIE is pleased to partner with G7 Renewable Energies to build, own, and operate this facility in South Africa,” said Mohamed Hoosen, ENGIE Africa MD Renewables AMEA & South Africa Country Manager.

Oya Energy signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom, and an Implementation Agreement with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy in 2023, which paves way for the construction of the project.

The hybrid power project is expected to provide clean power to some 180,000 South African homes once completed.

“This project represents the blueprint of a carbon neutral, 100% renewable future power grid – dominated by solar PV, supplemented by large amounts of wind power and storage capacity for balancing surpluses and shortfalls to provide all the power our economy needs without resorting to any fossil fuel,” Dr Kilian Hagemann, CEO of G7 Renewable Energies (Pty) Ltd. concluded.
