Renewable energy trading company and aggregator, Discovery Green, has secured five long-term renewable energy supply agreements with South African companies in the mining, property and hospitality industries. The companies include Impala Platinum Holdings, KP Lime, The Capital Hotels & Apartments, Balwin Properties and Fortress REIT.
Discovery Green will supply “price-certain” renewable energy to their new clients generated from wind and solar power plants under construction in various provinces in South Africa. The energy trading company will deliver the power to their clients through electricity wheeling.
A 5-year agreement that Discovery Green signed with Impala Platinum, which takes effect in 2026, will see the company supply 90% of the electricity needs for Impala Refineries in Springs, Gauteng. The deal will ensure Impala Refineries will achieve significant cost savings on over 130 000 MWh of electricity per annum.
“From 2026, the PPA will reduce our Scope 2 GHG emissions by 170,484 tonnes CO2e per year and advance our goal of achieving a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, off 2019 as our baseline year,” said Patrick Morutlwa, Group Chief Operating Officer at Impala Platinum.
Discovery Green also signed a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with KP Lime, a leading producer of burnt lime and dolomite. The energy trader will supply 54,000 MWh of renewable energy annually to KP Lime’s Bowden mine in the Northern Cape. The deal will see the Bowden Mine replace over 90% of its energy needs with renewable energy.
“With Discovery Green’s remarkable 90% renewable energy coverage, we can significantly reduce emissions while achieving meaningful operational savings,” said Aneesh Misra, CEO of KP Lime.
“By signing this agreement, we are reinforcing our dedication to advancing sustainability on a global scale, demonstrating that environmental stewardship and business success can go hand in hand,” added Misra.
Andre Nepgen, Head of Discovery Green, added: “The agreements with KP Lime and Implats are a significant step towards South Africa’s energy transition and highlight the power of collaboration in addressing climate challenges.”
“By integrating renewable energy into their operations, the mines can advance decarbonisation and position themselves for competitiveness in a low-carbon economy.”
The other deals Discovery Green announced is a 20-year contract signed with Balwin Properties – where they will supply 13,600 MWh of renewable electricity annually, a 15-year agreement with The Capital Hotels and Apartments, and a 10-year wheeling arrangement with Fortress REIT Limited.
“These partnerships highlight our commitment to supporting sustainable business growth and resilience, helping companies remain competitive in an increasingly dynamic market,” said Andre Nepgen, Head of Discovery Green.
