The government of Tunisia has this week ratified a concession agreement and power purchase agreement for the 100MW solar energy project in Kairouan to be built by a consortium led by Dubai based renewables developer, AMEA Power.
The ratification and signing of the of power purchase agreement took place at a ceremony at the government headquarters in Al Qasba and was attended by Tunisia’s Head of Government, Najla Bouden Romdhane and Tunisia’s Minister of mines and energy, Neila Nouira Genji and Minister of industry, Mr. Hussain Al Nowais.
The solar project will be built under a consortium which includes Chinese company, TBEA Xinjiang New Energy Co., Ltd. The AMEA Power led consortium was awarded the project in December 2019 as part of the first round of solar projects under the concession regime which was launched through an international tender program by the Ministry of Industry and SMEs in Tunisia in 2018.
“This is a great milestone for both Tunisia and AMEA Power. Through the government’s 2030 New Energy Vision, Tunisia aims to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix to 30% by 2030, corresponding to an additional installed capacity of approximately 4GW,” said AMEA Power’s Chairman, Hussain Al Nowais.
The construction of the solar power plant is expected to begin by the end of this year. The project has a planned electricity production of nearly 223,171 MWh per year, saving more than 113,525 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions on an annual basis.
“AMEA Power is proud to be able to support Tunisia in achieving this grande vision, and to contribute to reducing the country’s carbon footprint. AMEA Power continues to grow and today we are proud to be present in 15 countries, with a total capacity of about 2,000MW of renewable energy projects in operation, under construction and in development,” concluded Al Nowais.
