Mauritius issues tenders for 140MW of solar energy with storage

The procurement exercise to help Mauritius it meet its objectives to have renewables constitute 40% of its electricity mix by 2030, from the current 21.7%.

The Central Electricity Board (CEB) of Mauritius has issued two tenders calling for the supply of solar power from various solar power plants with a combined capacity of 140 MWp. Interested parties have up to the 15th of June 2022 to respond to the tender.

The first tender calls for “Purchase of Electrical Energy from Renewable Energy Hybrid Facilities (Solar PV+ Battery Storage)”. The CEB intends to accommodate 100 MW +/-10% of Renewable Energy Hybrid Facilities from this procurement exercise.

The second tenders calls for “Purchase of Electrical Energy from Small Scale Renewable Energy Hybrid Facilities”. The CEB intends to accommodate 40 MW +/-10% of Small Scale Renewable Energy Hybrid Facilities from this procurement exercise.

The two procurements exercises by the Mauritian state owned power utility are set to increase the country’s renewable energy generation capacity and help it meet its objectives to have renewables constitute 40% of its electricity mix by 2030, from the current 21.7%.

As of 2020, Mauritius had an installed renewable energy capacity of 83MW, according to estimates by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). 

Alongside the solar PV tenders to increase renewable energy generation capacity, the Central Electricity Board (CEB) of Mauritius is also running a scheme for the procurement of smart metres, with around 50,000 metres having been installed since the scheme started.
