AMEA Power breaks ground on 24 MWp solar project in Uganda

The solar power facility is expected to be completed and commissioned in Q3 2025.

Dubai headquartered renewable energy company, AMEA Power, has started construction on a 24 MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) project in the East African country of Uganda. The project’s groundbreaking ceremony took place last week on Friday, and was attended by Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development of Uganda, Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu.

The solar energy facility is being constructed on a 52 hectare site in Ombachi village, Uleppi Sub County, Madi Okollo District in the West Nile Sub-Region, around 450 km from Kampala the capital city of Uganda.

The project is being implemented by Ituka West Nile Uganda Limited, a project company registered in Uganda and fully owned by AMEA Power.

Financing for the project will be supplied by the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF). AMEA Power secured the funding during COP 28 last year. The African Trade and Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) will support the project via its Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF).

“We are excited to begin construction on this landmark solar project in Uganda, marking a significant step forward in our commitment to expanding our footprint across East Africa,” said Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power.

“This project aligns perfectly with Uganda’s vision for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future, and we are confident that it will deliver substantial economic and environmental benefits for the country,” Al Nowais added.

The solar power facility is expected to be completed and commissioned in Q3 2025. Once commissioned, it will be AMEA Power’s first operational asset in the country.

Furthermore, the solar plant is expected to generate approximately 53,940MWh of clean energy per year, enough to meet the power needs of more than 192,640 households. The facility will also help Uganda offset 26,600 tonnes of carbon emission annually.

The solar project has a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd. AMEA Power also revealed that it signed an Implementation Agreement (IA) with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development in September 2023.

The renewable energy developer says it will work closely with the local communities as part of its commitment to socioeconomic development, and will undertake key social initiatives under its ‘Community Investment and Development Programs’, aimed to focus on gender equality, education and training programs.
