Algeria’s Sonelgaz issues tender to procure 2 GW of solar energy

The latest tender by Sonelgaz is the second major tender for procurement of solar energy by Algeria within 2 years.

Algerian state-owned electricity utility, Sonelgaz, has issued a tender for the development and construction of 15 solar energy plants in eleven provinces, with a total capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW).

In a statement released last week, the Algerian utility outlined that the solar energy plants should have between 80 to 220 MW capacity, and interested bidders have up to the 29th of May 2022 to submit their bids.

The procurement of solar energy by Algeria is part of a plan by the North African country to develop 15 gigawatts of new generation capacity by 2030. According to the International National Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Algeria had developed 423 MW of installed renewable energy capacity by the end of 2021.

As part of its Energy Transition plan, Algeria is looking to diversify its energy mix, and reduce its reliance on oil and gas to meet its energy needs. The North African country targets to achieve 15,000 MW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2035.

According to Sonelgaz, the country’s transition to more sustainable energy sources will help provide “sustainable pricing”, and reduce the country’s carbon emissions in order to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

The North African country in December 2021, through its Ministry of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies launched a tender for the procurement of 1GW of solar PV energy. The winners for the tender are yet to be announced.

Sonelgaz and Sonatrach, the state-owned oil company, jointly own Société Algérienne des Énergies Renouvelables Spa (SHAEMS), a company that will acquire up to 25% shares in the special purpose vehicles (SPVs) that will own the winning projects in the 1 GW solar tender by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies.

The latest tender by Sonelgaz is the second major tender for procurement of solar energy by Algeria within 2 years.
