Siemens Energy inks Green Hydrogen deal with Egypt

Siemens Energy to implement a pilot project to deploy an electrolyser of up to 200MW as part of the deal.

German energy technology company, Siemens Energy, has entered into an agreement with the Egyptian state owned electricity utility, Egyptian Electricity Holding Co. (EEHC), to help develop a green hydrogen industry in the North African country.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed this week in the Egyptian capital Cairo by Siemens Energy president and CEO, Christian Bruch, and  EEHC chairman, Gaber El-Dessouki.

As part of the agreement, the two parties will implement a pilot project to deploy an electrolyser of up to 200MW. The German energy tech company says the project will help to drive early technology deployment, establish a partner landscape, establish and test regulatory environment and certification, set up off-take relations, and define logistic concepts.

“We are proud to extend our long history of collaboration with Egypt into this emerging industry that has the capacity to significantly decarbonise industry and expand economic diversity. The development of a homegrown hydrogen ecosystem and value chain in Egypt has the potential to deliver a more sustainable and prosperous future for Egyptians,” said Siemens Energy president and CEO, Christian Bruch.

Advancing Egypt’s Green Hydrogen ambitions

Egypt’s rich mix of renewable energy resources, a strong industrial base, developed infrastructure and easy access to European markets, provides a solid foundation on which to develop a robust green hydrogen industry.

Development of a competitive green hydrogen industry is part of Egypt’s developmental strategy and energy plan. According to the country’s Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy, Egypt hopes to increase the share of renewable energy capacity in its energy mix to 42% by 2035.

The partnership with Siemens Energy will help Egypt with its green hydrogen ambitions. “As a leading energy technology solutions provider, with a long legacy of supporting Egyptian development, Siemens Energy is able to provide innovative technologies spanning renewable energy, hydrogen production, and logistics, as well as financial and technical assistance,” said Siemens Energy.
